Eight Years, Hundreds of Beers

A long table of smiling friends and regulars sharing beers together in the Checkerspot Brewing taproom in Baltimore

Eight years ago, we turned the key on Ridgely Street for the first time, tapped the first keg, and quietly hoped a few people would wander in off the block. A few did. Then they came back, and brought friends. Somewhere in the middle of all that wandering-in and coming-back, Checkerspot became what it is now: a Baltimore brewery with eight years behind the bar and — we finally sat down and counted — several hundred beers behind us, too.

We're starting this journal to mark the occasion, and we want to be upfront about what it is and what it isn't. This isn't going to be an exhaustive archive of everything Checkerspot has ever brewed or done, and it isn't a roadmap of everything we're about to. We're not here to catalog the whole past and the whole future. We're just starting — with this post, on our eighth birthday, with a cold one close at hand.

Eight years, if you can believe it

When Judy and Rob Neff opened Checkerspot in 2018, the plan was simple and a little bit reckless: brew thoughtful, gluten-reduced beer in a neighborhood taproom and see who showed up. The gluten-reduced part is what made people raise an eyebrow. We were stubborn about it on purpose. We wanted a room where nobody had to sit out the round — where a friend with a gluten sensitivity could order the exact same pint as everyone else at the table and not give it a second thought. Eight years on, that's still the entire idea.

Plenty has changed around that idea. The kitchen found its footing and then found its ambition. The arcade filled up with pinball and regulars who take it far too seriously. The events calendar grew from a maybe-a-trivia-night into something closer to a second full-time job — craft nights, live bands, DJ sets, and private parties spilling into the back. But the bones of the place are the same ones we sketched out on day one.

Hundreds of beers, and counting

Here's the figure that surprised even us: across eight years of small-batch brewing, we've poured several hundred distinct beers. Some are flagships you can still order this afternoon — Camden Cream, Maryland Haze, State Insect. Some were one-weekend experiments that existed for exactly one keg before disappearing into taproom legend. A handful were genuinely strange. A few were honest mistakes we would happily make all over again.

That's the quiet luxury of brewing small: we get to stay curious. A hazy IPA one week, a pastry-leaning oddity the next, then a clean, crisp lager for the folks who simply want a clean, crisp lager. Hundreds of recipes means hundreds of chances to try something, taste it, learn from it, and pour the next round a little sharper than the last. We don't intend to stop.

People ask if we have a favorite. We usually dodge the question, because the honest answer is that the favorite is whatever's fresh and in front of us — the batch we just dialed in, the collaboration that finally clicked, the seasonal that only comes around once a year. Ask us again next week and the answer will have changed. That's kind of the point.

About that name

If you've ever wondered: the checkerspot is a butterfly — the Baltimore checkerspot, Maryland's state insect, black and orange and unmistakably local. We liked it as a name because it's ours, it's from here, and it rewards the people who look a little closer. Our State Insect beer is a nod to it. So is, in a roundabout way, the whole project: something particular to this city, made carefully, meant to be noticed.

Mostly, though, it's the people

Because if we're honest, the beer is only half of it. The other half is the room — the regulars who have claimed their table, the first-timers who found us on a rainy Tuesday, the birthday parties and retirement send-offs and quiet after-work pints that have filled these seats for eight years running. Hundreds of beers is a fun number to say out loud. Hundreds of afternoons and evenings spent with all of you is the part that actually carried us here.

We've watched people get engaged at that bar, celebrate new jobs, catch up with old friends, and argue cheerfully about pinball high scores. We've catered weddings and hosted fundraisers for causes we care about. None of that was in the original business plan. All of it turned out to be the best part of the job.

So, genuinely: thank you. For eight years, for the hundreds of beers, for wandering in and then coming back.

We'll use this journal to share what's pouring, what's coming up, and the occasional story from behind the bar. No grand archive, no master plan — just Checkerspot, one post at a time. Come raise a glass with us soon. Here's to the last eight years, the next eight, and the few hundred beers still ahead.
